426- Important icon of the Pokrov "Protection of the Holy MOTHER of GOD". This icon celebrates the veil of the Virgin which was kept in Constantinople in the church of Blachernes. The veil of the Virgin was worn in procession during calamities. During a siege of the city by sea, worn on the ramparts, it would have caused a storm dispersing the enemy ships. On the icon the Virgin comes out of the church of Blachernes and presents the veil. RUSSIA, circa 1800 42.8 x 33.8 cm
