110- Carved group in polychrome wood representing Saint Anne - Lot 110
110- Carved group in polychrome wood representing Saint Anne the Trinity. Rare representation by the position and familiar attitude of the characters: the Virgin with juvenile features tenderly embracing her mother Saint Anne. She holds in her left hand the book, symbol of the Word, and on her right arm the Child Jesus, turned towards the Virgin, holding out a bunch of grapes, symbol of the Eucharist and the coming Passion. The position of the Child Jesus, designates the passage from the Old to the New Testament. Some wears of the polychromy and small lacks. BRITTANY end of XVIth beginning XVIIth century, H: 76 cm The cult of Saint Anne the Trinity appeared in the 15th century introduced by Pope SIXTE IV. Abundantly spread throughout Finisterre, it embodies the maternal and earthly Trinity of the Child Jesus, thus responding to the paternal and spiritual Trinity. This devotion will find a rise again in the 17th century, in fact after having been very much practised in medieval times it declined. The aesthetics of this group can be compared to that of several sculptures from different churches in Finistère: the Virgin of the altarpiece of Saint Anne preserved in the church of Saint Derrien in COMMANA*, Saint Rose (Chapel of the deceased) in the church of Saint Melaine in MORLAIX, or Saint Margueritte in the church of Saint Guénolé in QUIMPER. *Illustrated in the work : *Art in Brittany, DUBIDOUR, page n°212.
