59- STRABON Geographikôn biblioi hepta kai deka Rerum geographicarum libri septemdecim. Basel, ex Officina Henricpetrina, August 1571. In-folio, stiff vellum, double framed in triple cold fillet, the second with gilt corner fleurons, oval medallion of arabesques on gilt ground in the center, spine decorated with gilt fleurons and cold braces with title and date handwritten in brown ink, smooth edges (Binding of the period). First edition of the Latin translation and commentary by Wihelm Holtzmann, known as Guglielmus Xylander. The translation is accompanied by the Greek text in a facing column, unlike the other edition published the same year by the same Basel bookseller, Heinrich Petri, which includes only the Latin version. The illustrations include 27 large double-page maps and a few smaller ones in the text, woodcut after the Ptolemy given in Basel by S. Münster. The title of the work bears the printer's mark, a reduced version of which appears on the verso of the last leaf. A fine copy in contemporary gilt vellum.
